Renault Master dimensions: every variant, L1H1 to L4H3, 8 to 17 m³

· 10 min read

Every Renault Master is 1.76 m wide inside. The cargo floor runs 2.58 to 4.38 m, the roof is 1.70, 1.89 or 2.14 m with front-wheel drive — and rear-wheel drive takes about 9 cm off the H2 and the H3. Renault sells the van by cubic metres, 8 to 17 m³, but the volume label hides the two things a conversion turns on: the width never changes, and the drive changes the headroom.

Below is every Master variant in the planner’s database, inside and out, with the payload each one leaves after a real build. The figures are the 3.5 t Master III (2010–2024), read from Renault’s German price list and checked September 2026; the 2019 facelift added 27 mm of bumper and nothing inside. The Vauxhall/Opel Movano built to 2021 and the Nissan NV400 (later Interstar) are the same van and share every number.

Interior length is bulkhead to rear doors, width is between the walls (the wheel arches are closer), height is floor to headliner before a build. Payload is the 3.5 t plate minus kerb weight — a planning figure, not a promise; the plate on the van in front of you wins. The L3H3 with rear-wheel drive appears in no Renault line-up I opened; it is kept for saved projects and its kerb weight and overall height are unverified.

Cubic metres to body codes: 8, 10.8, 13, 17 m³

Renault’s own labels run from 8 m³ for the L1H1 through 10.8 m³ for the L2H2 to 17 m³ for the L4H3 (Renault, Master III fourgon technical data, read September 2026). The 12, 13 and 15 m³ that dealer listings quote are the bodies in between — L2H3, L3H2, and L3H3 or L4H2 — rounded to the nearest whole number.

The label is useless for a camper. A “13 m³” L3H2 comes with front-wheel drive at 1.89 m of headroom or rear-wheel drive at 1.80 m, and both carry the same sticker. Read the L, the H and the drive on the listing; the volume can stay on the dealer’s sign.

The width: 1.76 m, and it never changes

Every length, every roof, every drive: 1.76 m between the walls, 2.07 m across the body outside. Take off about 6 cm for two finished walls and 1.70 m is left. That is the narrowest large van in the planner — a Ducato has 1.87 m, a Crafter 1.83 m, a Sprinter 1.79 m — and it is the one number that decides the bed.

A transverse bed in a Master needs wall flares: notching the panels behind the rear quarter windows gains 5–8 cm a side, which gets a 1.75 m sleeper across and still leaves a 1.80 m one short. Without flares the bed runs lengthways, which is why Master conversions at L2 tend to be one-bed vans and the L3 is where two people plus a kitchen fit. The sleep-across table runs the same arithmetic for every base van.

Height: the drive matters more than the roof letter

With front-wheel drive the H1 is 1.70 m, the H2 1.89 m and the H3 2.14 m floor to headliner — about 1.63, 1.82 and 2.07 m once a floor and ceiling are built. A front-drive H2 stands adults to roughly 1.80 m; a front-drive H3 covers anyone up to about 2.00 m.

Rear-wheel drive lifts the floor about 9 cm. The RWD H2 is 1.80 m raw and about 1.73 m finished, marginal for a 1.75 m adult; the RWD H3 is 2.05 m raw, about 1.98 m finished, which is what a front-drive H2 on a Sprinter gives. Outside, the RWD bodies are also taller — 2.53 m for an H2 against 2.49–2.50 on front drive — so you pay for the propshaft twice. The standing-height post puts these next to every other van.

None of them park under a 2 m barrier: 2.31 m for an H1, 2.49–2.53 m for an H2 and 2.74–2.82 m for an H3, before a roof fan adds about 15 cm.

Wheelbase: the RWD L3 rides on the L2’s

Front-drive Masters run three wheelbases: 3.18 m on the L1, 3.68 m on the L2 and 4.33 m on the L3. The rear-drive L3 keeps the L2’s 3.68 m wheelbase and hangs 65 cm more body off the back; the rear-drive L4 takes the front-drive L3’s 4.33 m and does the same. So an RWD L3H2 is a 6.20 m van with a 6.85 m van’s worth of rear overhang behind a short wheelbase — it swings wide, loads the rear axle harder and drags on steep ramps.

That is fine when the rear of the floor carries a garage for bikes and a water tank sits forward. It is not fine with a lithium bank, a heater and the kitchen all behind the axle. The axle-load arithmetic is the place to check before choosing the drive.

Payload: 1,462 kg down to 1,005 kg

The shortest, lowest, front-drive Master carries the most: 1,462 kg on the L1H1. Each step of length and roof adds kerb weight against the fixed 3.5 t plate, and rear-wheel drive adds about 150 kg on its own — an L3H2 weighs 2,220 kg with front drive and 2,372 kg with rear drive on single rear wheels, so its payload drops from 1,280 to 1,128 kg.

Run a typical 600 kg build and the EN 1646-2 two-person reserve through it and roughly 717 kg is left on an L1H1, 640 kg on an L2H2, 523 kg on an L3H2 FWD, 512 kg on an L3H3 FWD, 371 kg on an L3H2 RWD and 319 kg on an L4H3. Under 400 kg is where a full water tank, two adults and a week’s food start to argue with each other; the under-3.5 t comparison shows how the Master sits against the other large vans on that measure. Renault also plates the same bodies at 3.3 t and, with twin rear wheels, at 4.5 t; those change the payload and the licence, not one interior dimension above.

Movano, NV400, Interstar: one van, and the year matters

Renault builds the Master III in Batilly and two other badges wore it: the Vauxhall/Opel Movano from 2010 to 2021 (Movano B) and the Nissan NV400, renamed Interstar in 2021. Floor, walls, roofs, wheelbases and door apertures are identical, so every figure above is theirs and a layout drawn for one fits the others unchanged.

The trap is the Movano badge. From 2021 the Movano C is a Fiat Ducato under an Opel grille — 1.87 m wide inside, different lengths, different roofs. A used listing that says “Movano L3H2” is a Master body if it is 2021 or older and a Ducato body if it is newer, and the two do not share a single interior dimension. The twins post has the full map, and the 2024 Master IV is a new body again, not in these tables.

Which Master for which build

  • L2H2 FWD — the value two-person van: 3.08 m of floor, 5.55 m outside, 1.89 m of headroom, 640 kg left after a build. Lengthways bed or a flared transverse one for sleepers up to about 1.75 m.
  • L3H2 FWD — 3.73 m of floor, more than a Ducato L3, at 6.20 m outside: over the 6 m ferry and campsite step, but room for a fixed lengthways bed, a garage and a proper kitchen with 523 kg to spare.
  • L2H3 or L3H3 FWD — for anyone over 1.80 m or an overhead-locker run. 2.14 m raw, about 2.07 m finished, and the front-drive H3 costs only 11–41 kg of payload against the H2.
  • Any RWD — buy it for towing or a heavy rear garage, not for space: about 150 kg less payload, 9 cm less headroom and a short wheelbase under a long tail. The L4H3 gives 4.38 m of floor for four berths at 319 kg of spare payload.
  • L1H1 / L1H2 — weekender or trade van; 717 and 689 kg after a build, the best in the range, no standing in the H1.

The MWB-vs-LWB post makes the length call as a layout question, and the planner puts your layout in the real variant with live weight and axle loads. Because L and H mean something different on every make, the body-code decoder is worth a look before cross-shopping: a Master L3 is 3.73 m, a Sprinter L3 is 4.31 m.

FAQ

What are the interior dimensions of a Renault Master?

2.58 m (L1), 3.08 m (L2), 3.73 m (L3) or 4.38 m (L4) of cargo floor behind the bulkhead; 1.76 m between the walls on every variant; and 1.70 m (H1), 1.89 m (H2) or 2.14 m (H3) floor-to-headliner with front-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive raises the floor, so an RWD H2 is 1.80 m and an RWD H3 2.05 m. The L2H2 most conversions start from is 3.08 × 1.76 × 1.89 m.

What are the dimensions of a Renault Master L2H2?

3.08 m long, 1.76 m wide and 1.89 m high inside; 5.55 m long, 2.07 m wide (mirrors excluded) and 2.50 m tall outside, on a 3.68 m wheelbase. Renault rates it at 1,390 kg of payload on the 3.5 t plate, which leaves about 640 kg after a typical 600 kg build and the EN 1646-2 two-person reserve. Renault sells this body as the 10.8 m³ Master.

Which Renault Master is 12 m³, 13 m³ or 15 m³?

Renault labels the Master III box van by rounded load volume, from 8 m³ (L1H1) through 10.8 m³ (L2H2) to 17 m³ (L4H3); the 12, 13 and 15 m³ figures on dealer listings are the L2H3, the L3H2 and the L3H3 / L4H2 in between. The volume label says nothing about width or headroom — read the L and H code on the same listing, because a 13 m³ L3H2 with rear-wheel drive has 9 cm less headroom than the front-wheel-drive one.

Which Renault Master can you stand up in?

Any H2 or H3 with front-wheel drive: the FWD H2 is 1.89 m raw and about 1.82 m finished, the FWD H3 2.14 m raw and about 2.07 m finished. With rear-wheel drive the floor sits higher, so an RWD H2 is 1.80 m raw (about 1.73 m finished — marginal for a 1.75 m adult) and an RWD H3 2.05 m. The H1 is 1.70 m, a sit-down van.

What is the payload of a Renault Master camper?

Between 1,462 kg (L1H1) and 1,005 kg (L3H3 rear-wheel drive) on the 3.5 t plate, before a build. A typical 600 kg conversion plus the EN 1646-2 reserve for two leaves roughly 717 kg on an L1H1, 640 kg on an L2H2, 523 kg on an L3H2 FWD, 371 kg on an L3H2 RWD and 319 kg on an L4H3.

Are the Vauxhall Movano and Nissan NV400 the same as the Renault Master?

Yes, for the 2010–2021 Movano (Movano B) and the NV400 / Interstar: they are the Renault Master III body built in Batilly, France, with the same floor, walls, roofs, wheelbases and door apertures, so every figure here applies unchanged. The Movano sold from 2021 (Movano C) is a Fiat Ducato instead — 1.87 m wide inside, not 1.76 m.

I'm Vladimir. I'm planning my own conversion, and none of the tools I tried could tell me whether a layout would fit or what it would do to the rear axle, so I made this one. I work on it alone. If something's wrong or missing, write to me — the address goes to my inbox.
