Fiat Ducato dimensions: every variant, L1H1 to L4H3
· 9 min read
Every Fiat Ducato is 1.87 m wide inside. The length runs 2.67 to 4.07 m and the height is 1.66, 1.93 or 2.17 m — those three numbers are the whole decision. The width never changes, which is why the Ducato is the default conversion base in Europe: a transverse bed fits in the shortest one.
Below is every variant in the planner’s database, inside and out, with the payload each one leaves after a real build. The figures are the European 3.5 t Ducato’s, read from maker documents and checked September 2026 — and the Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay/Jumper and RAM ProMaster share all of them.
Every Ducato variant, measured
| Variant | Drive | Interior L × W × H | Payload ≈ | Wheelbase | Ext. height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L1H1 | FWD | 2.67 × 1.87 × 1.66 m | 1,560 kg | 3.00 m | 2.25 m |
| L2H1 | FWD | 3.12 × 1.87 × 1.66 m | 1,520 kg | 3.45 m | 2.25 m |
| L2H2 | FWD | 3.12 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | 1,480 kg | 3.45 m | 2.52 m |
| L3H2 | FWD | 3.71 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | 1,405 kg | 4.04 m | 2.52 m |
| L3H3 | FWD | 3.71 × 1.87 × 2.17 m | 1,370 kg | 4.04 m | 2.76 m |
| L4H2 | FWD | 4.07 × 1.87 × 1.93 m | 1,265 kg | 4.04 m | 2.52 m |
| L4H3 | FWD | 4.07 × 1.87 × 2.17 m | 1,230 kg | 4.04 m | 2.76 m |
Interior length is bulkhead to rear doors, width is between the walls (not between the wheel arches, which are closer), height is floor to headliner before a build. Payload is the 3.5 t plate minus kerb weight — a planning figure, not a promise; the plate on the van in front of you wins.
The width that does not change: 1.87 m, always
Every length, every roof, every drive: 1.87 m between the walls. Take off about 6 cm for two finished walls and 1.81 m is left, which takes a standard 1.86 m mattress across the van with flares or a 1.75 m sleeper without them. No other European base van gives you that in its shortest body — a Master is 1.76 m, a Sprinter 1.79 m, a Crafter 1.83 m.
That single figure is why an L2H2 Ducato works as a two-person camper at 5.41 m of exterior length, where a Sprinter needs an L3 to do the same job. The sleep-across table runs the same arithmetic for every base van.
Height: H1 is not a camper roof
H1 gives 1.66 m inside, about 1.59 m once a floor and ceiling are built. That is a crouching van at any length — fine for a weekender with a pop-top or a fixed bed you slide into, wrong for a build you stand up in. H2 gives 1.93 m raw and about 1.86 m finished, which covers adults to roughly 1.80 m. H3 gives 2.17 m raw and about 2.10 m finished, which covers everyone.
Outside, none of them park under a barrier: 2.25 m for an H1, 2.52 m for an H2 and 2.76 m for an H3, before a roof fan adds about 15 cm. An H3 with a fan is 2.91 m tall — worth knowing before a ferry deck or a multi-storey.
Wheelbase: three, not four
The L3 and the L4 share a wheelbase — 4.04 m. The L4 is an L3 with 36 cm more body hung off the back. It buys 36 cm of cargo floor and costs 140 kg of payload against the L3H2, plus rear overhang that swings wide, loads the rear axle harder and drags on steep ramps. The L1 runs a 3.00 m wheelbase and the L2 3.45 m.
If the extra floor is going behind the rear axle anyway — a garage, a shower pod — the L4 is the cheap way to get it. If it is going to carry weight, the axle-load arithmetic argues for the L3 and a tighter layout.
Payload: 1,560 kg down to 1,230 kg
The shortest, lowest Ducato carries the most: 1,560 kg on the L1H1 against 1,230 kg on the L4H3, because each step of length and roof adds kerb weight against a fixed 3.5 t plate. Run a typical 600 kg build and the EN 1646-2 two-person reserve through it and roughly 815 kg is left on an L1H1, 731 kg on an L2H2, 650 kg on an L3H2 and 471 kg on an L4H3.
Fiat also plates the same bodies at 3.3 t and at 4.0–4.25 t (the Maxi). Those change the payload and the driving licence you need; they do not change one interior dimension in the table above. The under-3.5 t comparison covers what each plate buys.
UK, French and Dutch names for the same four bodies
| Code | Cargo floor | UK trade name | Wheelbase |
|---|---|---|---|
| L1 | 2.67 m | SWB | 3.00 m |
| L2 | 3.12 m | MWB | 3.45 m |
| L3 | 3.71 m | LWB | 4.04 m |
| L4 | 4.07 m | XLWB / Maxi | 4.04 m |
Fiat’s 33 / 35 / 40 numbers are gross-weight series in tonnes, not lengths, so a “33 L1H1” and a “35 L1H1” are the same box on a different plate. And because L and H mean something different on every make, the body-code decoder is worth a look before cross-shopping: a Ducato L3 is 3.71 m, a Sprinter L3 is 4.31 m.
Boxer, Relay, Jumper, ProMaster: one van
The Sevel plant in Italy builds one body and four badges wear it. Floor length, width, wheel arches, door apertures and roof heights are identical, so every figure above is also the Boxer’s and the Relay’s, and a layout drawn for one fits the others unchanged. The Vauxhall/Opel Movano joined the family in 2021 — before that it was a Renault Master, 11 cm narrower inside.
The exception is North America. The RAM ProMaster keeps the body but carries Ram’s own plates and names — 118″, 136″ and 159″ wheelbases, low and high roofs, 1500/2500/3500 series — and is rated for 1,724–2,186 kg of payload on heavier US plates. Same steel, different paperwork; the twins post has the full map.
Which Ducato for which build
- L2H2 — the default two-person camper. Transverse bed, small garage, kitchen along one wall, 5.41 m outside so it still parks like a car park. 731 kg left after a typical build.
- L3H2 — the same plus a real bathroom or a long kitchen. 3.71 m of floor, 6.00 m outside, which is the last length under most campsite and ferry 6 m price steps.
- L3H3 — for anyone over about 1.80 m, or a build with an overhead locker run. Costs 35 kg and 24 cm of exterior height against the L3H2.
- L4H2 / L4H3 — a fixed lengthways bed over a full-width garage, or four berths. 6.36 m outside puts you in the higher ferry and campsite band, and payload drops under 500 kg after a build.
- L1H1 / L2H1 — day van, surf van, pop-top. Best payload in the range, no standing.
The Ducato layouts post draws what actually fits at each length, and the planner puts your layout in the real variant with live weight and axle loads.
FAQ
What are the interior dimensions of a Fiat Ducato?
Between 2.67 and 4.07 m of cargo floor behind the cab depending on length, 1.87 m wide between the walls on every variant, and 1.66 m (H1), 1.93 m (H2) or 2.17 m (H3) floor-to-headliner. The L2H2 most conversions start from is 3.12 × 1.87 × 1.93 m.
How wide is a Fiat Ducato inside?
1.87 m between the walls, on every length and every roof — the widest European base van. After about 6 cm of finished walls that leaves roughly 1.81 m, so a 1.75 m adult sleeps across a Ducato of any size without wall flares. Outside it is 2.05 m across the body, mirrors excluded.
What is the wheelbase of a Fiat Ducato camper?
Three wheelbases cover four lengths: 3.00 m on the L1, 3.45 m on the L2, and 4.04 m on both the L3 and the L4. The L4 is not a longer wheelbase — it is an L3 with 36 cm more rear overhang, which is why it loses payload and gains tail swing without gaining stability.
Which Ducato can you stand up in?
H2 and H3. An H2 is 1.93 m floor-to-headliner, about 1.86 m once a floor and ceiling are built, so adults up to roughly 1.80 m stand with clearance. An H3 is 2.17 m raw, about 2.10 m finished, which covers anyone. An H1 is 1.66 m — a sit-down van whatever its length.
What is MWB and LWB on a Fiat Ducato?
UK trade names for the same four bodies: SWB is L1 (2.67 m of floor), MWB is L2 (3.12 m), LWB is L3 (3.71 m) and XLWB or Maxi is L4 (4.07 m). Fiat's own 33 / 35 / 40 numbers are gross-weight series, not lengths — they change the plate and the payload, not a single interior dimension.
Is the Peugeot Boxer the same size as the Fiat Ducato?
Yes, to the millimetre. The Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay (Jumper outside the UK and Ireland) and RAM ProMaster are one body from the Sevel plant in Italy: same floor, same wheel arches, same door apertures, same roofs. A layout drawn for one fits the others without changing a cut. Only the plated weights and the engines differ.
