Ducato L2H2 vs L3H2 vs L4H2: which length fits your layout?

The Fiat Ducato (and its Ram ProMaster twin) is Europe's most-converted van for a reason: it's the widest panel van in its class at roughly 1.87 m between the walls, front-wheel drive keeps the floor low, and parts are everywhere. But “a Ducato” is really three different homes. Here's what each length actually allows.

The width advantage — one decision the Ducato makes for you
At ~1.87 m between the walls, the Ducato is one of the few vans where a transverse bed works for most people without flaring the walls: after insulation and cladding you keep roughly 1.78–1.82 m of sleeping length. If you're under ~1.80 m tall, sleeping across the van frees 60–80 cm of floor compared to a longitudinal bed — on an L2 that's the difference between having a living area and not.
L2H2 (3.12 m): the weekender
Fits any car park, drives like a car, cheapest to buy and run. The maths is honest: a transverse bed takes ~1.4 m of the 3.12, leaving ~1.7 m for kitchen and living. That's a galley kitchen and a bench — not a bathroom. Works brilliantly for couples who shower at campsites and weekend adventurers. The classic mistake is trying to squeeze a shower cubicle in anyway and ending up with a van that does nothing well.
L3H2 (3.71 m): the sweet spot
The extra 60 cm over the L2 is exactly one module: a compact wet room, or a forward-facing bench for kids, or a real workspace. This is why the L3 is the best-selling camper base in Europe — transverse bed at the back, galley kitchen, wet room opposite, and it still parks in a normal(ish) space at 5.99 m. If you're undecided, you're probably an L3.
L4H2 (4.07 m): the apartment
Another 36 cm and the highest payload (~1,500 kg — useful, because big builds are heavy builds). The L4 fits a fixed bed plus a garage plus a dedicated bathroom plus a four-person dinette — the full-timer's spec. The costs are parking (6.36 m is longer than most bays), ferry and toll classes, and nerve in old-town streets. Full-timers say it's worth it; weekenders usually regret it.
