FWD vs RWD vs AWD for a van conversion: traction with a loaded rear, by model

Front-wheel drive is fine for a camper up to an L3 body: a 600 kg build placed the way the planner’s templates place it puts 74–80 % of itself on the rear axle, the front gains 120–160 kg, and with two people in the cab the drive axle still carries about half the van. The trap is the long overhang — L4 and L5 bodies drop 84–103 % of the build on the rear axle and 0–100 kg on the front — and in the database every one of those is rear-wheel drive except the Ducato L4 and the Crafter L5. AWD is for snow and grass and costs 170 kg of payload; it does not fix a rear-heavy build. That is the answer. The table below is the arithmetic per platform and body length, from the drive, wheelbase and kerb figures in the van database and the planner’s axle model, with every assumption stated.

The assumptions

  • A 600 kg build — the planner’s Weekender or Family template on a Ducato L3H2 with full cladding comes to 585–602 kg, the figure the 3,500 kg post uses too.
  • Placed as the templates place it: a 330 kg bed-and-garage block (bed and mattress, 125 L tank, battery and inverter, gas bottle, garage gear) centred 0.75 m ahead of the rear doors — a 1.5 m deep transverse bed flush against them — and a 270 kg living block (kitchen, fridge, seat, wardrobe) centred on the floor that is left between the bed and the bulkhead. Insulation and cladding are spread evenly and do not move the split.
  • Axles from the planner’s model: front axle 1.0 m ahead of the bulkhead, rear axle one manufacturer wheelbase behind it, never closer than 0.5 m to the rear panel. The “rear overhang” column is axle centre to interior rear panel from that model — an estimate, not a manufacturer figure, and the one number in the table that is not straight from the database.
  • Empty van 55 % on the front axle, FWD and RWD alike — a general-knowledge figure for an unladen panel van, not from the database, used only for the drive-axle-share column. Two people in the cab: 150 kg on the front axle.
  • The split is the planner’s two-support beam: rear share = (front axle − centre of mass) ÷ wheelbase. Mass behind the rear axle counts more than 100 % and unloads the front, which is exactly the effect this post is about.

The table: every platform and body, what the build does to each axle

“Drives” lists what the database carries per body with the payload of each. “+front / +rear” is how the 600 kg lands. “Drive axle, loaded” is the share of the whole van (kerb + build + two people) on the driven axle — the traction number.

The database carries the drives each maker sells as a standard panel-van line; factory and aftermarket 4×4 conversions (Sprinter 4×4, Crafter and Transporter 4Motion, Ducato 4×4 by Dangel) are not in it, and what is said about them below is general knowledge, labelled.

How to read it

  • Overhang, not drive, is the first column to read. Rear share of the build tracks the axle-to-rear-panel distance almost one to one: 0.5–0.8 m of overhang keeps 74–80 % of the build on the rear axle, 1.0 m makes it 84 %, 1.4–1.6 m 90–95 %, and the Daily L5’s 2.0 m puts the whole build and 3 % more on the rear axle — the front gets 18 kg lighter as you finish the conversion. Manufacturers know this, which is why the long bodies are RWD in the catalogue.
  • FWD up to L3 keeps about half the van on the drive axle. Ducato L3, Transit L3, Crafter L4, Master L3 FWD: 50–51 % of the loaded mass on the front with two people aboard. That is a normal loaded estate car, and it pulls out of wet grass. The front-axle-light FWD van of forum legend is the one with the 1.0 m+ overhang, or the one with an extra 200 kg of water and bikes behind the axle — see the next point.
  • Ducato L4 and Crafter L5 are the two long FWD bodies. 84 % and 89 % of the build on the rear, 49 % of the loaded mass on the drive axle before you add the e-bikes. They work — thousands are on the road — but they are the FWD bodies where the tank goes ahead of the axle, the batteries under the front seat, and the garage stays light. If your plan is a motorbike or 200 L of water, the same body in RWD (Crafter) or a Sprinter/Daily is the honest answer.
  • RWD gets better as the build gets worse. Every kilogram behind the axle is traction for a RWD van and lost traction for a FWD one. The Sprinter L4 at 51 % and the Daily L4 at 52 % on the drive axle loaded are the most sure-footed rows in the table — and also the ones with the least payload left (895–1,055 kg), which is the trade the 3,500 kg post prices.
  • AWD costs payload and buys a different problem. Transit L3H2: 2,149 kg FWD, 2,237 kg RWD, 2,317 kg AWD — the AWD pays 168 kg of a 1,351 kg payload for its transfer case. On the loaded rear it changes nothing: the rear axle already has 75–95 % of the build. It changes snow, mud, wet grass and steep gravel tracks, where the driven-axle share stops mattering because both are driven. Buy it for where you park, not for what you built.
  • Hills unload the front on top of all this. On a 10 % grade a van with its centre of mass 0.9 m up and a 3.5–4.3 m wheelbase shifts another 2–2.5 % of its mass to the rear (editorial: tan θ × height ÷ wheelbase). A FWD L4 at 49 % on the flat is at 46–47 % on the campsite ramp, in the wet, with the water tank full. That is the moment people remember.

The one lever you still have after buying

Water. 125 L is 130 kg you can put anywhere along the floor. In an L3 Ducato (rear axle 1.18 m ahead of the rear panel in the planner’s model, wheelbase 4.04 m) a tank centred 0.75 m behind the axle puts 119 % of its weight on the rear axle and lifts 24 kg off the front; the same tank centred on the axle is 100 / 0; centred 0.75 m ahead of the axle it sends 24 kg to the front. That swing — about 50 kg on the front axle from one tank — is the difference between the FWD rows above and the forum stories. Before you sign

Pick the body length for the layout first — the which-van pillar does that by the numbers — then read its overhang row here. Under 1.0 m, take whichever drive the price and the engine make cheaper. At 1.0 m and above, take RWD unless the build is light at the back, and put the tank forward of the axle either way. Then drop the template into the planner on that exact variant and watch the rear-axle number as you move the bed.

Is a front-wheel-drive van bad for a camper conversion?

Not up to L3. A 600 kg build placed the way the planner's templates place it (bed and garage systems against the rear doors, kitchen forward) puts 74–80 % of its weight on the rear axle of an L2 or L3 body, so the front axle gains only 120–160 kg while the van gains 600. With two people in the cab the front axle of a FWD Ducato, Transit, Crafter or Master still carries about half the total — enough to pull out of a wet field. The trap starts with 1.0 m or more of rear overhang.

Which vans put the most of the build behind the rear axle?

The long bodies with long overhangs: Daily L5 (2.0 m from axle to rear panel in the planner's model; 103 % of the build lands on the rear axle, the front actually gets lighter), Daily L4 (1.6 m, 95 %), Transit L4 (1.5 m, 94 %), Sprinter L4 and Crafter L5 (1.4 m, 89–90 %), Daily L3 (1.1 m, 87 %), Ducato L4 and Master L4 (1.0 m, 84 %). Every one of those is rear-wheel drive in the database except the Ducato L4 and the Crafter L5, which are the two long FWD bodies to think twice about.

How much payload does AWD or RWD cost?

From the kerb weights in the database: a Transit L3H2 is 2,149 kg FWD, 2,237 kg RWD (+88) and 2,317 kg AWD (+168), so the AWD gives up 168 kg of a 1,351 kg payload. Sprinter and Crafter RWD are 60–72 kg heavier than their FWD twins; the RWD Master (twin rear wheels) is 262 kg heavier than the FWD Master on the same L3 body. AWD buys grip on snow and soft ground, not on a loaded rear — the rear axle already has the weight.

Where should the heavy items go in a FWD van?

As far forward as the layout allows and never behind the rear axle. Water (1 kg per litre) and the battery are the movable masses: a 125 L tank at the axle instead of 0.75 m behind it moves about 40 kg back onto the front axle of an L3, and moving it just ahead of the axle turns the whole 130 kg into front-axle load. The weight-distribution post has the lever rule; the planner reports the split per axle while you drag the tank.
