Ford Transit and Transit Custom dimensions: load space by variant, L2H2 to L4H3
· 9 min read
On a Transit the drivetrain decides the standing height, not the roof letter. H2 is 1.88 m with front-wheel drive and 1.79 m with rear- or all-wheel drive — the same body, 10 cm apart. The load floor sits higher over a driven rear axle, and Ford prints both figures. Buy a rear- or all-wheel-drive Transit on “H2 = high roof” and you get 1.72 m over your head once built; the front-wheel-drive one gives 1.81 m.
Below are all 13 Transit variants in the planner’s van database — L2, L3, L4, two roofs, three drivetrains — with the four Transit Custom variants beside them, so “Transit or Custom” gets decided on the numbers. Every figure is read from maker documents (Ford catalogue 2021) and was checked September 2026; the Transit is the current body from 2014 at 3.5 t, the Custom the first generation of 2012–2023 that the used market is made of.
Every Transit variant, measured
| Variant | Drive | Interior L × W × H | Payload ≈ | Wheelbase | Ext. height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L2H2 | FWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 1.89 m | 1,405 kg | 3.30 m | 2.55 m |
| L2H2 | RWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 1.79 m | 1,315 kg | 3.30 m | 2.55 m |
| L2H2 | AWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 1.79 m | 1,235 kg | 3.30 m | 2.55 m |
| L2H3 | FWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 2.13 m | 1,360 kg | 3.30 m | 2.79 m |
| L2H3 | RWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 2.02 m | 1,270 kg | 3.30 m | 2.79 m |
| L2H3 | AWD | 3.04 × 1.78 × 2.02 m | 1,190 kg | 3.30 m | 2.79 m |
| L3H2 | FWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 1.88 m | 1,351 kg | 3.75 m | 2.55 m |
| L3H2 | RWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 1.79 m | 1,263 kg | 3.75 m | 2.55 m |
| L3H2 | AWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 1.79 m | 1,113 kg | 3.75 m | 2.55 m |
| L3H3 | FWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 2.12 m | 1,306 kg | 3.75 m | 2.79 m |
| L3H3 | RWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 2.02 m | 1,218 kg | 3.75 m | 2.79 m |
| L3H3 | AWD | 3.49 × 1.78 × 2.02 m | 1,068 kg | 3.75 m | 2.79 m |
| L4H3 | RWD | 4.22 × 1.78 × 2.02 m | 1,107 kg | 3.75 m | 2.78 m |
Interior length is bulkhead to rear doors, width between the walls (not between the wheel arches), height floor to headliner before a build. Payload is the 3.5 t plate minus kerb weight — a planning figure; the plate on the actual van wins. Each variant has its own page with door apertures and arch spacing.
Every Transit Custom variant, measured
| Variant | Drive | Interior L × W × H | Payload ≈ | Wheelbase | Ext. height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L1H1 | FWD | 2.56 × 1.77 × 1.41 m | 1,137 kg | 2.93 m | 1.98 m |
| L1H2 | FWD | 2.56 × 1.77 × 1.78 m | 1,100 kg | 2.93 m | 2.37 m |
| L2H1 | FWD | 2.92 × 1.77 × 1.41 m | 1,081 kg | 3.30 m | 1.98 m |
| L2H2 | FWD | 2.92 × 1.77 × 1.78 m | 1,044 kg | 3.30 m | 2.34 m |
Same measuring rules, payload against 3.1 t (Ford’s “310”; 280, 300, 320 and 340 also exist and are not modelled). The Custom from 2023 on is a new body with different figures — this table is the first generation you buy used.
Roof codes: H2 is two heights, not one
- H2 — 1.88–1.89 m inside with front-wheel drive, 1.79 m with rear- or all-wheel drive, 2.55 m outside. Finished 1.81 and 1.72 m: standing room to about 1.78 m in the front-driver, to about 1.69 m in the rear- and all-wheel-drive Transit.
- H3 — 2.12–2.13 m front-wheel drive, 2.03 m rear or all-wheel, 2.78–2.79 m outside. Finished 2.05 and 1.96 m — with front-wheel drive a 2 m adult stands. There is no H1 on the Transit van.
For scale: a Sprinter H2 is 2.01 to 2.08 m, a Ducato H2 1.93 m, a Crafter H2 only 1.63 to 1.73 m. The front-wheel-drive Transit H2 sits between Crafter and Ducato; the rear- and all-wheel-drive one just above the Crafter. The whole range is in the standing-height table; why H2 means something different at every maker is the body-code decoder’s subject.
Lengths: L2 is the shortest, L4 is an L3 with overhang
There is no Transit L1 — the van starts at L2 with 3.04 m of cargo floor on a 3.30 m wheelbase. L3 gives 3.49 m on a 3.75 m wheelbase; L4 keeps that 3.75 m wheelbase and adds 72 cm of rear overhang, so 4.22 m of floor on a 6.70 m van. What that overhang does to the axle loads is in the drivetrain post: on an L4, 94 % of a build lands on the rear axle. The L4 comes only as an H3 with rear-wheel drive.
The trade names: “350 L3H2” is weight series plus length plus roof — 350 means 3,500 kg gross, and 290, 310 and 330 are the same body with a lower plate and correspondingly less payload. Ford UK calls L2, L3 and L4 MWB, LWB and LWB EL (Jumbo); Ford Germany’s older FT 280 K / 300 M / 350 L codes (short, medium, long) belong to the pre-2014 body, whose figures are not in this table. The US Transit is measured against the Sprinter and ProMaster separately, in inches.
Transit or Custom: the same width, two classes
Both are 1.78 m between the walls — after about 6 cm for two finished walls that is 1.72 m, short of a transverse bed without arch flares; the arithmetic for every body is in the sleep-across table. From there they part:
- Length — Custom L1 2.56 m, L2 2.92 m; Transit L2 3.04 m on the same 3.30 m wheelbase as the Custom L2. Outside, Custom L2 and Transit L2 are 5.34 and 5.53 m long.
- Height — Custom H1 1.41 m inside (1.34 m finished, a sit-down van), H2 1.78 m (1.71 m finished, standing to about 1.65 m). The front-wheel-drive Transit H2 is the first roof in the range an average adult stands under.
- Exterior height — Custom H1 1.98 m: clears the 2 m barrier. Custom H2 2.34–2.37 m and every Transit (2.55 m up): no multi-storey.
- Payload — Custom 1,044 to 1,137 kg against 3.1 t; Transit 1,068 to 1,405 kg against 3.5 t. A front-wheel-drive Transit L2H2 carries 361 kg more than a Custom L2H2.
What genuinely fits in 2.5 to 2.9 m of floor with no standing height is the small-van layouts post.
The catch: all-wheel drive costs up to 238 kg
From the kerb weights: an L2H2 is 2,095 kg front-wheel drive, 2,185 kg rear and 2,265 kg all-wheel; an L3H2 is 2,149, 2,237 and 2,387 kg. All-wheel drive therefore costs 170 to 238 kg of payload and 10 cm of height — and buys grip on snow, not on a loaded rear. Put the typical 600 kg build and the EN 1646-2 two-person reserve through that and what is left is:
| Variant | Drive | Payload | Left after a build |
|---|---|---|---|
| L2H2 | FWD | 1,405 kg | 655 kg |
| L2H2 | RWD | 1,315 kg | 565 kg |
| L2H2 | AWD | 1,235 kg | 485 kg |
| L2H3 | FWD | 1,360 kg | 610 kg |
| L2H3 | RWD | 1,270 kg | 520 kg |
| L2H3 | AWD | 1,190 kg | 440 kg |
| L3H2 | FWD | 1,351 kg | 596 kg |
| L3H2 | RWD | 1,263 kg | 508 kg |
| L3H2 | AWD | 1,113 kg | 358 kg |
| L3H3 | FWD | 1,306 kg | 551 kg |
| L3H3 | RWD | 1,218 kg | 463 kg |
| L3H3 | AWD | 1,068 kg | 313 kg |
| L4H3 | RWD | 1,107 kg | 345 kg |
655 kg on a front-wheel-drive L2H2, 313 kg on an all-wheel L3H3. And the Custom, against its 3.1 t plate:
| Variant | Payload | Left after a build |
|---|---|---|
| L1H1 | 1,137 kg | 392 kg |
| L1H2 | 1,100 kg | 355 kg |
| L2H1 | 1,081 kg | 333 kg |
| L2H2 | 1,044 kg | 296 kg |
296 kg on a Custom L2H2 is two people and a half-full water tank. The comparison across every base van is in the under-3.5 t post.
Which Transit for which build
- L3H2 front-wheel drive — the sensible two-person build: 3.49 m of floor, standing to about 1.78 m, 5.98 m outside, 596 kg left.
- L3H3 front-wheel drive — for anyone over 1.80 m: 2.12 m raw, 2.05 m finished, 2.79 m outside.
- L4H3 rear-wheel drive — lengthways bed over a full garage on 4.22 m; 345 kg left and a rear axle carrying 94 % of the build.
- Rear- or all-wheel drive in an H2 — only if you really need it: 1.72 m finished means stooping. Want all-wheel drive and standing room? That is an H3.
- Custom L2H1 — day van, car park, pop-top: 2.92 m of floor under 1.98 m of exterior height.
FAQ
What are the load space dimensions of a Ford Transit?
3.04 m of cargo floor on an L2, 3.49 m on an L3 and 4.22 m on an L4; 1.78 m wide between the walls on every variant; and 1.79 to 2.13 m floor-to-headliner depending on roof and drive: H2 is 1.88–1.89 m with front-wheel drive and 1.79 m with rear- or all-wheel drive, H3 2.12–2.13 m and 2.03 m respectively. These are the current body (2014 on) at 3.5 t gross.
How tall is a Ford Transit L3H2 inside?
1.88 m with front-wheel drive and 1.79 m with rear- or all-wheel drive, floor to headliner; outside it is 2.55 m. On rear- and all-wheel drive the load floor sits 10 cm higher over the driven axle. After a 7 cm floor and ceiling that leaves 1.81 m — standing room up to about 1.78 m — against 1.72 m, where nobody over about 1.69 m stands with clearance.
What do MWB, LWB and 350 L3 mean on a Ford Transit?
MWB, LWB and LWB EL (Jumbo) are the UK trade names for L2, L3 and L4: 3.04, 3.49 and 4.22 m of cargo floor, on 3.30 m, 3.75 m and 3.75 m of wheelbase — the L4 is an L3 with 72 cm more rear overhang. The number is the gross-weight series: 350 is 3,500 kg, and 290, 310 and 330 are the same body with a lower plate and less payload. None of them is an interior dimension.
What are the interior dimensions of a Ford Transit Custom?
2.56 m (L1) or 2.92 m (L2) of cargo floor, 1.78 m between the walls, 1.41 m of interior height in the standard H1 roof and 1.78 m in the high H2 — the first generation (2012–2023) the used market is made of. Outside, the H1 is 1.98 m tall and clears a 2 m barrier; the H2 is 2.34–2.37 m.
Can you stand up in a Ford Transit Custom?
Not in an H1: 1.41 m raw, 1.34 m finished, a sit-down van. The H2 is 1.78 m raw and about 1.71 m after a floor and ceiling — standing room up to about 1.65 m, and everyone taller stoops. The first roof an average adult stands under is the big Transit's H2 with front-wheel drive: 1.88 m raw, 1.81 m finished.
Transit or Transit Custom for a camper conversion?
A Custom L2 and a Transit L2 share a 3.30 m wheelbase; the Transit has 12 cm more floor (3.04 vs 2.92 m), 10 cm more height in the H2 (1.88 vs 1.78 m, front-wheel drive) and about 300 kg more payload (1,405 vs 1,044 kg). The Custom H1 is 1.98 m tall and the only one of the two that fits a multi-storey car park. If you want to stand, it is the Transit; if you must stay under 2 m, it is a Custom H1 with a pop-top.
