Camper van layouts for a family of 4: what actually fits

A family of four in a panel van is the hardest brief in van conversion. Not the most expensive, not the heaviest — the hardest, because it stacks three requirements that each eat the same scarce resource: four legal travel seats, four sleeping spots, and enough loose floor for a rainy Tuesday when nobody can go outside. Couples get to trade space against comfort; a family of four has to satisfy all three or the van doesn't work as a family vehicle at all.

The constraints have an order, and it's not the order most build threads discuss them in. Seats first, beds second, storage last. Get them backwards and you design a beautiful sleeping arrangement around a bench nobody is allowed to ride on.

Constraint zero: four seatbelts is engineering, not joinery

The cab gives you two or three factory seats. The rest of the family travels in the back — which means a rear bench with proper seatbelts, and that is a different category of work from everything else in the build. A bed frame that fails costs you a bed. A seat mounting that fails in a crash costs you a child. Rear travel seats need crash-tested seat frames, mounting points engineered into the van's structure (typically a subframe spreading load across the floor and chassis members, pull-tested to demonstrate strength), and in most countries some form of approval or inspection before the vehicle is legal to carry passengers back there.

The specifics vary by country, and this article won't pretend otherwise: buy a certified seat frame from a manufacturer who publishes test documentation, have it installed by someone who does this professionally, and confirm what your registration authority requires before the build starts. Budget seriously for it — a certified, installed rear bench is routinely one of the two or three biggest line items in a family conversion. Plywood and lag bolts are not a travel seat, whatever the forum photo suggests.

Everything below assumes this is solved, because the bench's position — almost always directly behind the cab, facing forward — is the fixed point the rest of the layout arranges itself around.

Layout 1: Bunks over the garage (XLWB / Ducato L4, ~4.0 m+ floor)

The layout that most family builds converge on, because it's the only one where nothing converts. Transverse adult bed at the back over a garage, and two kids' bunks stacked along one wall between the bed and the seating area — usually the driver's side, leaving the sliding-door side for the kitchen run.

Bunk dimensions are the make-or-break numbers. A workable kids' bunk is ~60 cm wide internally and 160–180 cm long — 160 cm suits kids to roughly age ten, 180 cm buys you the teenage years. Two bunks plus mattresses and structure stack into about 140 cm of height, so this is high-roof territory, and each bunk platform should be built and rated for a stated weight limit (a growing kid plus the friend who climbed up to look) rather than hoped at. The space under the lower bunk is the family wardrobe — the one storage volume in this layout that's actually cupboard-shaped, so use it for clothes, not water tanks.

The cost is length. Bench, bunks, kitchen, and a transverse bed do not compress below about 4 m of cargo floor, which puts you in a Ducato L4, Sprinter 170″, or Transit Jumbo — the longest panel vans made. Layout 2: Dinette-bed + fixed bed (LWB / Ducato L3, ~3.5–3.8 m floor)

The layout that makes a family fit in a van you can still park. Fixed adult bed at the back, and a proper four-seat dinette behind the cab that folds into the kids' bed at night. The dinette earns its floor space three times over: it's the dining table, the rainy-day homework and board-game surface, and the second bed. If — and only if — the dinette benches are certified travel seats, it's also the seatbelt solution, and the layout gets remarkably efficient: one module doing the job of three.

The compromise is the daily ritual. Every evening the table drops, cushions rearrange, and bedding comes out of wherever bedding lives; every morning it reverses before anyone gets breakfast. With two adults that ritual is a mild annoyance. With two overtired kids at 21:30 it's a logistics operation, and it's the honest reason families migrate from this layout to Layout 1 when they move from holidays to longer trips. Size note: a dinette bed for two kids comes out around 120 × 160 cm. Fine for small children who still sleep like starfish; by the time the older one passes ~150 cm tall, sharing it stops being restful for anyone.

Layout 3: Sleeping upstairs — pop-top or over-cab platform

The third family of layouts solves the bed problem vertically. A high-roof van has dead air above the cab and the seating area; a fixed platform there — an over-cab style bunk, typically ~120 × 180 cm — sleeps the parents or the kids and hands the entire rear floor back to daytime life. In a standard-roof van, an aftermarket pop-top roof does the same job: two berths upstairs, whole floor downstairs, and the van still fits under height barriers when closed.

The pop-top caveat deserves its paragraph: a quality elevating roof is a four-to-five figure installation, it adds 60–100 kg high on the vehicle where weight matters most for handling, and it's a structural modification (a large hole in the roof) that belongs with a specialist installer, not a weekend. It's canvas-walled sleeping — glorious in July, character-building in October. For three-season family use it's the cheapest floor space you can buy; for winter trips, budget for the insulation problem it creates.

The weight problem nobody budgets for

Here is where the family build diverges hardest from the couple build. Four occupants plus family gear — clothes for four, food for four, bikes, toys, the inflatable everything — is realistically 350–450 kg of payload before a single piece of furniture goes in. A couple's build fits inside a 3.5 t van with room to argue; a family build is where 3.5 t gets genuinely hard. Add a certified seat bench (heavy by design), bunk structures, a bigger water tank because four people drink and wash, and a bigger battery because four people charge things, and many family builds are overweight before the first weekend away.

When a van is the wrong answer

Honesty section. If your kids are already teenagers, or there are three of them, or the weight math above made you wince — run the numbers on a coachbuilt motorhome or a car plus caravan before committing to a panel van. A coachbuilt gives you factory-certified travel seats, real bunks, and a bathroom at a lower price per usable litre than any self-build can match, because the box is wider than any panel van. A caravan gives the family a base camp and keeps the tow car for daily life. The panel van's advantages — stealth, drivability, one vehicle for everything — are real, but they're adult advantages. If all three layouts above fail against your actual children's ages and sizes, the vehicle is wrong, not the layout.
