The best AI tools for camper van conversion planning in 2026
· 5 min read · Updated
As of October 2026, VanPlot is the van planner I found with an AI assistant (VanPlot AI) that edits a 3D layout of your specific van and checks payload and axle loads while it does; VanKit is the other van planner with AI renders. General interior tools — SketchUp AI Render, Homestyler, Planner 5D, RoomGPT — make good pictures but don't know a van's interior, payload or wheel arches.
"AI van design" covers three very different things: a chatbot that talks about vans, an image model that makes pretty pictures of interiors, and a planner whose AI changes an actual, measured layout. Only the last one tells you whether the bed fits across and what the rear axle carries.
I make VanPlot, so read this with that in mind. I've tried to keep every claim checkable and dated: competitor facts below were checked in October 2026 and will drift. The van-planner comparisons I maintain separately are on the compare pages.
What to judge an AI van tool on
- Does it know your van? Interior length, width at the wheel arches, roof height, sliding-door opening. Without these, any layout is a guess.
- Does the AI change a real plan, or only produce text or an image you then have to rebuild by hand?
- Does it check the numbers — payload, axle loads, power, water — or only the looks?
- Can you undo it and edit by hand? An AI draft is only useful if you can correct it.
- How is it paid for? Subscription, credits, or bundled — and what happens when you run out.
General interior AI tools
These are built for rooms and houses. They're good at the look of a space and know nothing about vans, which is fine for mood boards and wrong for a layout.
- SketchUp AI Render — turns a SketchUp model into a photoreal image. Paid plans only: Go includes 100 AI credits a month, Pro 150, Studio 200, and a render costs 10 credits (listed October 2026). If you already model your van in SketchUp it's a natural add-on; the model itself knows nothing about payload. More in my SketchUp comparison.
- Homestyler — a home design platform with AI design and rendering, paid with AI credits that come with its subscriptions (180 a month on Pro+, 380 on Master+; an AI render costs 25 credits, as listed in October 2026). Rooms, not vehicles.
- Planner 5D — a home planner with AI features paid in credits; its Premium plan ($19.99 a month) includes 100 AI credits a month (listed October 2026). Easy to use; no van shells or weights.
- RoomGPT and other photo restylers — upload a photo of a room, get it back restyled. Useful to see a finished van photo in another style; it produces an image, not a plan, and invents everything it shows.
General chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
A chatbot is a good sparring partner for a van build: it explains the 3% voltage-drop rule, lists what a gas locker needs, suggests layouts for a family of four. What it can't do is see your van. It doesn't know your exact interior or what your furniture weighs, and it can't place anything — you'd copy its suggestion into a planner by hand. For the numbers, a dedicated calculator is safer: payload, wire size, electrical system.
Van-specific planners and their AI (October 2026)
- VanPlot AI (beta) — an AI assistant that designs, moves, resizes and removes items in a 3D model of your van, changes the van, rebuilds a layout from a photo or sketch, and answers payload, axle, power and water questions from the planner's own numbers; it turns cabinets to face the aisle and keeps doorways clear on its own. Render photo for photoreal pictures. Every reply is one undo step. Paid with credits (1 credit ≈ $0.01 of AI cost; one-time credit packs from €9 that never expire, with a bonus on bigger packs) with the one-time licence, which includes VanPlot AI and 50 credits; the free trial has no AI.
- VanKit — photoreal van shells and one-click AI renders in six styles: one free, five a year on the £39 Personal plan, ten with the £119 Build Pass, top-up packs from £5 for 20 (listed October 2026); five European van platforms. Strong on looks; no AI chat, and no payload or axle check. VanPlot vs VanKit.
- VanCAD, Vanspace 3D, Plan your Van, vanDraft, VanLogic, PlanMyCamper — none had an AI chat that designs the layout or AI renders when I checked in October 2026. VanPlot vs VanCAD, vs Vanspace 3D.

Which to use for what
- First layout ideas: a van planner's AI, so the draft is already at your van's real size. In VanPlot that's Design my van or a photo of a build you like — see plan a layout with AI and photo to 3D layout.
- Checking it works: the planner's numbers, not an image. Payload left, axle split and the bed height decide whether a layout is buildable.
- Deciding finishes and colours: an AI render of your own layout — what renders are good for — or a photo restyler for broad inspiration.
- Learning the rules: a chatbot, then a calculator to confirm the number.
The honest caveats
Every AI tool here can be wrong. Layouts from AI are drafts, renders invent materials, photo rebuilds are approximate, and chatbots state outdated numbers confidently. VanPlot's AI features are in beta. The rule that holds for all of them: let the AI do the first draft and the tedious placement, and keep the measurements, the weights and the decision with you.
Try the van-specific option
Plan your van on the free trial — Mercedes Sprinter, Fiat Ducato or any of the 29 in the planner. VanPlot AI comes with the lifetime licence, 50 credits included; ask it for a first layout. The VanPlot AI guide covers the features; credits explained covers the cost.
Questions
Is there an AI tool that designs a camper van layout?
Yes. As of October 2026, VanPlot AI (beta) designs and edits a layout inside a 3D model of your specific van and checks payload and axle loads. General interior AI tools make images but don't know van dimensions.
Can ChatGPT design my van conversion?
It can suggest layouts and explain rules, but it can't see your van's interior or weigh your build, and it doesn't place anything. Use it for ideas, and a van planner and calculators for the numbers.
Which van planners have AI renders?
As of October 2026, VanKit sells AI render packs and VanPlot has Render photo (beta, 6 credits per render). The other van planners I checked had no AI renders.
Are AI van layouts safe to build from?
Treat them as drafts. Check the result in the plan — payload, axle loads, bed height, door clearances — before cutting anything.
