Murphy beds in camper vans: the fold-away fix for small layouts

The fixed-vs-convertible bed debate is usually framed as a two-option problem: pay for comfort with floor space, or pay for floor space with a nightly furniture ritual. The murphy bed is the third option that most first builds skip — a real mattress on a real frame that folds flat against a wall, made bedding and all, and gives the floor back every morning. Fixed-bed sleep, convertible-bed daytime. What you pay instead is build complexity and one entire wall of the van.
The space math
Fold a longitudinal murphy bed up against the wall and the whole assembly — frame, mattress, hinge cassette — occupies roughly 30–40 cm of depth off that wall. Everything else the bed used to cover is floor again.
Take a 140 × 190 cm double, a normal couple's size. As a fixed bed it permanently claims about 2.7 m² of van. Folded up, the same bed's footprint drops to roughly 0.6–0.8 m² of wall-hugging depth — so around 2.5 m² of daytime floor comes back, every day, without dismantling anything. In an MWB van with barely 3.0–3.4 m of cargo floor, 2.5 m² is not an optimisation; it is the difference between a corridor and a room. This is the layout trick that makes MWB work for two people: the fixed-bed feasibility rows that read “Tight” or “No” at that length mostly assume the bed never moves.
What a murphy bed actually requires
The reason it is not the default layout is that the requirements list is real. Numbers below are typical for a DIY double; check them against your own frame and van before cutting ply.

The structural point deserves repeating because it is the one that fails silently. A camper wall lining is a cosmetic skin over ribs and air. Sixty to ninety kilograms of bed, cycled up and down daily and shaken over every pothole, must transfer its load into the van's steel ribs through a proper ply backer. Bolt the hinge rail into lining alone and the failure mode is the bed, the wall, and your kneecaps meeting at speed.
The honest trade-offs
A murphy bed is not free floor space; it is floor space bought on credit. The repayments:
- The bed wall is dead when the bed is down. Every cabinet, socket, and hook on that wall is unreachable at night. Plan the layout so nothing you need after bedtime — water pump switch, heater control, the fuse panel — lives behind the mattress.
- Bedding has to survive the fold. Most designs hold a made bed with two retaining straps, but thick duvets bulge and pillows migrate. Budget the folded-depth figure with bedding on, not with a bare mattress.
- You lose the garage. A fixed bed's best argument is the storage bay underneath it — the numbers are in the garage dimensions guide. A murphy bed folds to a wall, so that volume never exists. Bikes, water, and toolboxes migrate to a bench-seat platform, underfloor boxes, or the roof — and each of those is a compromise the fixed-bed builder never has to make.
- It is harder DIY than a fixed frame. A fixed bed is four legs and a slat platform; a bad one still works. A murphy bed is a hinged, counterbalanced, load-bearing mechanism where strut sizing, hinge geometry, and wall anchoring all have to be right at once. Kits reduce the risk; they do not remove the structural wall work.
Three ways to build one
“Murphy bed” covers at least three distinct layouts, and they suit different vans:
- Longitudinal side-fold. The classic: bed hinged along one wall, folding up lengthwise. Needs the ~200 cm continuous wall run and swings across the full aisle, but frees the most floor and keeps the rear doors clear. The natural MWB choice.
- Transverse rear-fold over a half-garage. Bed hinged across the van near the rear, folding up against a rear bulkhead or door frame, often above a reduced-height garage platform. A hybrid: you keep a shallow garage and still reclaim the mid-van floor. Wants a wide-body van where sleeping across the van is possible.
- Seat-integrated. The folded bed forms the backrest or wall panel behind a sofa or dinette, so the same square metres are seating by day and bedroom by night. The most space-efficient and the most build-intensive — the seat structure and the bed structure have to be engineered together.
Draw the arc before you build the wall
Swing arcs are exactly what 2D sketches miss. A floor plan shows the bed down or the bed up; it cannot show the diagonal sweep between the two, which is where the mechanism meets your kitchen counter, your flue, or your head. The clearance problems live in the third dimension and in the transition.
